Sim 1 is an online Java simulation of test cricket by Philip Shead. It is a Java version of the original Dos Sim 1. To play Sim 1 you need a Java enabled browser. It will work with Netscape 4.x and Internet Explorer 3.02/4.0.

When you first initialise Sim 1 you are presented with the Team Selection screen. You can either build your own teams from the players available or select one of the many teams already defined. You can also add a player to the list by entering their name, batting and bowling average, Stamina, Batting scoring rate and type of bowler. Once added you can select this player. Once you have selected the teams you can start the game.

The main game screen shows a full scorecard. By bowlers who are eligible to bowl is a small button. You play the game by clicking on the button of the next bowler. Each bowler has a stamina rating and once that falls below a certain value he can not bowl again until his stamina has recovered. There are no other tactics available. The result of each delivery is shown in a scrolling text box which stores the details of the current innings.

At any time you can view full details of all innings in a separate window which can be cut and pasted if you want to save the scorecard. You can switch to view any innings already completed or back to the the current innings to continue. There is also an option to declare an innings.

Java Cricket has some problems with fonts (the screenshots have not been reduced in size but are actual size) which appear very small but that could be down to how Internet Explorer handles Java. Sim 1 is interesting the first time you play it but there might not be enough to keep you spending time online playing it. If you could see averages as a result of all the online games played that would be a real enhancement.

There are plans for a Sim 2 which will implement batting order and include run rates, strike rates, pitch conditions, new ball and more!
